In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus says, "When you give alms," not "If you give alms." Jesus expects his disciples to share what they have with those who lack food, clothing, shelter, or medicine. At First Presbyterian Church, there are many ways that you can give of your time or your money to assist those who are in need. In the Bible, Jesus says, "When you fast," not, "If you fast." While many people go on diets, the spiritual discipline of fasting is increasingly rare. Yet for healthy Christians, there is a Biblical expectation that we will abstain from food from time to time. If fasting is a spiritual practice that you are unfamiliar with, you may want to read this article about the hows and why of fasting. What is Ash Wednesday and Lent?

Lent is the 40 days, not counting Sundays, before Easter. This year Easter falls on April 1, which means that today, Ash Wednesday, is the first day in Lent! We invite you to join us for a simple meal at 6:00 PM followed by worship in our sanctuary at 6:40 or so. We will sing, read scripture, hear our handbell choir perform the piece Dies irae, and be signed with ashes on our foreheads.
