First Presbyterian is a member of the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States, the PCUSA.
With Christians everywhere, we worship and serve One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is fully human and fully divine. He is the One Mediator between God and humanity.
We are Protestant Christians. We believe that God saves human beings from sin and death by grace alone, and not because of any good deeds we do. Good deeds are the effect, not the cause, of our salvation. We receive God's gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. We believe that the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the final authority for what we should believe and how we should live joyful and obedient lives.
We are Reformed Christians. Our congregations are led by ordained ministers and lay elders. Elders serve on the congregation's governing board, the Session. We believe that God calls women and men to all ministries of the Church, including ordained ministry. We believe that God chooses human beings for service in the world as well as salvation. We strive to be good stewards of God's material gifts by living generous and sustainable lives. We seek justice for all, peace between nations, and the transformation of society.
